The Daily Telegraph/House & Garden Fair 2007, the UK's most prestigious event for interior and garden design, promises to astound visitors with a host of garden installations and exhibitors to represent the best designs for outdoor living. Ranging from the best known brands [can we name any?] to fresh and exciting new names, the Fair brings an unprecedented line up of exhibitors all carefully handpicked to inspire those who love their garden.
Is there really any outstanding, prominent garden designers? For anyone passionate about gardens, the Fair is an excellent opportunity to see the very latest classic and contemporary designs from many of the country's most prominent designers. And with numerous interactive seminars and talks going on throughout the Fair, visitors can glean many expert tips and advice to take home with them. Is there any garden orientated talks?
Following the theme of scent, celebrated garden designers Todd Longstaffe-Gowan and Richard Miers have each created a spectacular garden installation for the Fair.
Clouds of Scent
Renowned for his interest in the dramatic and sculptural potential of gardens, Todd Longstaffe-Gowan has created a floating floral mobile, adorning the Grand Hall of the Fair with giant floating shapes cloaked with living scented plants. Ranging from spheres to discs, all strung together with thin wires, the shapes will resemble floating clouds that hover from knee height to just above head height, enticing the visitor to meander and explore between them. Created from a variety of aromatic herbs and sweet-smelling flowers, the installation will be a floating maze, leading the visitor on a sensory journey through the garden.
The Scented Garden
Drawing inspiration from Baroque architecture, Richard creates an olfactory oasis in The Scented Garden. The garden is balanced upon the bold axis of a scented herbaceous border, flanked by twin paved paths and an impressive avenue of scented shrubs. A Buxus ‘Ribbon’ hedging interweaves the shrubs and brings the different features of the garden together. Beneath the striking file of shrubs lies a fragrant Camomile lawn, drawing the visitor towards the far end of the garden where they will discover a secluded terrace. This area is guarded by an aubergine coloured wall veiled with delicate scented roses and other aromatic climbers. Echoing the central herbaceous boarder, this sheltered areas is sprinkled with more herbaceous flowers which stimulate the senses and gracefully surround a zinc tower of water.
Other exciting exhibitors at the Fair include:
Emily Readett-Bayley Ltd
A well established name in garden furniture design, Emily Readett-Bayley reclaims teak from old colonial bridges and buildings to be made into beautifully designed tables and benches. Inspired by a trip to Bali where she was amazed by the skills of the mask makers, tailors, leather workers and woodcarvers, Emily now combines her own design vision with the skills of village groups in Bali and Java. At the Fair, expect to see beautiful tables and benches, made from teak reclaimed from old colonial bridges and buildings in Bali. She will also be showing products from her new collection ‘Posh Graffiti’, wooden letters and numbers that can be used indoors or out.
Haddonstone Ltd
Haddonstone, the UK’s leading manufacturer of cast stone garden ornaments, will launch the new Bayeaux Fountain at the Fair, a double-tiered, self-circulating water feature inspired by classical architecture. But for something a bit more contemporary, look no further than the new range of contemporary planters, or the four new plaques depicting the four seasons, and the Arcadian Lawn Edging System. All Haddonstone products begin to weather and acquire a patina more like natural stone, so if you’re looking to create a ripened garden in a short timeframe, then you cannot afford to miss this stand.
Green Oak Furniture by Marnie Moyle
Working from her own back garden, Marnie Moyle will be launching further pieces to her hand made English oak garden furniture collection. The pieces are hand made to commission and are personalised with carved words,.. English grown and English made, Marnie uses locally grown oak which is not treated, so as it ages, it distorts giving it a certain English rustic charm. The Fair will be the first opportunity to see Marnie’s new collection of swings, and a fresh long thin table design.
David Harber Sundials
David Harber can be considered an artist in the garden. David Harber has an international reputation for creating innovative, contemporary sundials, water feature and sculpture designs using only the most skilled workmanship. Working with a range of materials, from stone to cast iron, David Harber sundials are the ultimate timepieces with which to adorn your garden.
Hutchinson Furniture
Mark and Vanessa Hutchinson have been creating handmade furniture since 1991. They use wood grown on the land around their workshops to create furniture. While they are in the process of acquiring carbon neutral status from the Carbon Trust, the fresh designs from Hutchinson Furniture are all you need for stylish and eco conscious outdoor living.
Lloyd Loom of Spalding
Lloyd Loom of Spalding, one of the UKs last remaining handmade furniture manufacturers, will be showcasing a brand new range of ‘All Weather’ Lloyd Loom furniture, which can be used both indoors and outdoors. This is a new development in outdoor furniture, and the definitive Lloyd Loom style, achieved by weaving together synthetic strands of material to emulate traditional twisted paper, is evident on each piece. All pieces, including sun loungers, chairs, tables, cubes and sofas are available with cushions and can be used the whole year round for the stylish outdoor living.
